Next up is a second song proposed by the Bill, Cough Syrup, the 2011 release by California alternative band Young the Giant. And it’s weighted random opponent is current #813, How Deep is Your Love, the famous BeeGees song.
Here are the two YouTubes:
How Deep is Your Love is such a classic. But it’s just so so retro and nostalgic and 70s. 70s! It’s time to move on from this song too as far as the Eliminator is concerned. But, to give it its due. It was #1 worldwide in 1977, is #375 on Rolling Stones’ list and it’s all just so vibey and fun to listen to if you are trying recreate a late 1970s prom.
I remember listening to Cough Syrup when it came out and liking the song quite a bit. It got to #3 on the alternative charts and it was in the Hot 100 for a time. And it’s a pretty straightforward rockin’ alternative tune that falls in a long tradition of similar songs. And it’s AT LEAST ONE MILLION TIMES more relevant today than How Deep is Your Love. I really like the beginning of this song and then the way it settles in to a deep alternative vibe.
The Eliminator has decided it is about relevance and anti-nostalgia. How Deep is Your Love is a PERFECT song to Eliminate. I mean really once you have heard that song seven trillion times, does it add to your life in any meaningful way? Leave it to the old folks homes, I say. Let’s move on. Cough Syrup goes in at #802.
