Analysis: Good showdown here between fresh and classic. 2016 vs. 1970.
Maybe I’m Amazed is the first “new” song to face Elimination, but it is down to a very low Eliminator score of only 4 more listens because it’s so so so old. A friend had said that Maybe I’m Amazed had to replace another Paul McCartney song and so I did it. But really this song, though great, is from another time and not really modern in any real sense. Even the lyrics are a bit of that old “I’m a very troubled guy and you love me anyway” thing and so you are great. There’s no modern 2021 person who would accept that logic, or at least they shouldn’t. If your relationship is troubled, and you are the cause of the trouble, she or he really shouldn’t love you anyway. That’s SO 1970s.
I’ll admit that Lake Street Dive kind of trends of a smooth jazz kind of feel at times, more than say folk or even country. They really aren’t definable, and I’m cool with that. A kind of contemporary genre bending group. The lead female vocalist, Rachael Price, has some serious vocal chops in that voice. You can just hear the New England Conservatory of Music across the band – there’s some serious technical ability in this group. But for me its the power of the vocals that stands out. Almost Haley Reinhart level. Probably better trained too. Outstanding.
This is the second Elimination in a row, just following the elimination of classic songs, where another classic song is being Eliminated. Mistakes goes in at #524 (2,224 more listens). Maybe I’m Amazed had a very short life in the Eliminator, surviving less than two months. But such is the role of the opponent randomizer. Maybe I’m Amazed is Eliminated.
