The next battle in the Eliminator is between Nguya na ngai by Kolinga and current #973 My Girl by the Temptations!
Here are the videos:
Analysis: This is the first absolute slaughter in the history of The Eliminator. Now, if you are a traditionalist for sure you are thinking My Girl is the winner. You would be totally 100% wrong.
My Girl, by the Temptations is one of the absolute epic classics. It’s #88 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Everyone knows this song. When it was released in 1964, it quickly rocketed to #1 “I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day….” “Talkin’ ’bout my girl”. It’s a ringer song for traditionalists.
But, for purposes of the Eliminator, My Girl has absolutely NO CHANCE against the Congolese band Kolinga and their super modern (2020) song about the suffering of women. This song is in Lingala, which is one of the many many languages spoken in Congo. Translated, this song means “my power”. But more than all of that, this is just a great danceable song that just keeps on bringing it with uptempo beats, brass background, and outstanding vocals from Rebecca M’Boungou.
The Eliminator Ruling: Nguya na ngai wins going away, knocking My Girl out of my top 1000. Music has to be about innovation and change, expressing new, more relevant thoughts. My Girl was a song for the ages, in the past tense. It’s not a song for this age. And Nguya na ngai will be in the top 1000 for a very long time – it’s going in at #451.
